Squeezing it all in

 We are three months from returning home, so we are cramming all we can into our time. For Rob, that means bikes and soccer and mate and pictures of graffiti. For Sarah, that means swimming and walking and looking for treasures at the Tristan Navaja Feria on Sundays. For Marieka, that means gymnastics, swim team and friends. We are thinking: What haven't we seen? What do we need to experience? Can we sit in the sunshine more? (and...how are we going to sell these dang appliances?).

My parents came down and spent Spring Break here. There is nothing better than showing people around a place you have been living...and it is a bonus if you actually like it! We went to the beach, we swam with my swim group, we checked out the Artigas Mausoleum, the Presidential Offices and Colonia. We ate pizza and pasta and bbq. It was a great visit.





Since they left, it has been a whirlwind of school, swimming, soccer, gymastics and repeat. Marieka gets to attend 2 more competitions before we leave, which is awesome. She also gets to go to Argentina for a school swim meet- the girl is an international athlete!

My swim group hosted another night swim, that started with us witnessing a shooting star- it was pretty amazing! I got hit by flying fish and tried to follow the light on the buoy in front of me.



So now life seems consumed by selling appliances we bought, planning our trip home and trying to squeeze as much out of life as we can here. School is done in 6 weeks, we move to an Air BnB around the corner, and then head off for Argentina- both north and south, to swim, see penguins and ski in Ushuaia, then back to Buenos Aires to see the Big City!

When I moved to China, I was surprised by the level of, well, obsession, with food among my fellow teachers. Anytime you found yourself in a conversation, it inevitably became a discussion about food- where was the cheapest place to shop, where was the best western food in the area, where can one find American necessities like Kraft Macaroni and Cheese (orange, preferably), corn chips that were familiar, or regular- in a jar- spagetti sauce. Summer/Winter/Summer

I will admit, it has been pleasant to have summer break, in the middle of winter, even if has been disconcerting to the rythms of one's typical climate experience. We have been out of school for over 7 weeks, and it has been glorious. We got to go home to Wenatchee for nearly a month, and regardless of the snow closing the passes, the 3 feet of snow that fell, the endless worry about COVID, having family and friends test positive, it was a trip I wouldn't trade for anything. The old adage is true- home is where the heart is, and getting to ski, hike, be in the hills, hug family and friends made the trip incredibly sweet.  Travelling internationally during COVID is a new sort of beast. Usually, I am stressed about having passports ready- but the new reality of finding a PCR test that is at the right time and location for your flight, along with actually getting the results on time, is a whole new level for me. Big city vacation, sorta

On Sunday, we finally ventured out to the biggest street market, or "feria" in Montevideo, Tristan Narbaja. It is towards downtown, in the Parque Rodo neighborhood, which I have heard is the" up and coming" part of town that features art, restaurants and, like much of MVD, endless tagging on the buildings, which makes me sad.  The really great thing though about the day is that it felt like a "mini vacation" to a very different world from our sorta suburban life in Punta Gorda. It was like a vacation to the big city! The Campbellgates LOVE a street market. We love unusual food, the knick knacks and the people watching. This market was massive, on par with our favorite market in St. Petersburg Russia. that we all have a favorite item and story from.
